Summer safety tips

It is important to stay healthy and safe during the summer months.
Summer safety is an important priority, especially when more and more people suffer from heat overexposure each year. One of the ways you can stay safe this summer is by staying hydrated and protecting yourself from the sun. Here are some other summer safety tips everyone should know:

1. Protect yourself from the sun

Too much exposure to the sun’s rays can be harmful to your body. You can protect yourself from the sun by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 30 SPF. Make sure you generously apply sunscreen to your body every two hours and after getting wet. Take breaks often and don’t forget to drink lots of water. Look for the following signs of heat exhaustion:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Elevated body temperature
  • Vomiting or fainting 

If you or someone you are with experience any of these symptoms drink water or an electrolyte beverage, rest in a cool area, and avoid carbonated beverages. If you are experiencing severe symptoms like vomiting or fainting, you should call 911 immediately. 

2. Wear bug spray

Wearing bug spray is a great way to protect yourself from insect bites, including mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can cause a number of illnesses ranging from the Zika virus to the West Nile Virus.  Be sure to apply bug spray when you may be outdoors for an extended period of time.  

3. Practice water safety 

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide. Babies and young children are especially at risk of drowning. It is important for everyone to practice water safety and remember these helpful tips:

  • Always swim with a friend
  • If you go boating, wear a life jacket
  • Designate one adult to watch children in and around water at all times
  • Children should always wear life jackets in open water

4. Use the proper safety equipment

When riding bicycles, scooters, skateboards, etc. make sure that you are using the proper safety equipment. Helmets are very important protects your head from serious injury. Be mindful of using proper safety equipment for any and all summer activities you are doing including helmets, knee pads, life jackets, and more. 

5. Be prepared

Take some time to pack the proper equipment and supplies to keep you and your family safe. Staying hydrated during the summer is very important so be sure to bring a lot of water. A summer bag can include things like a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray, and a small first-aid kit.
